A pile-dwelling house had several storeys. Rock carvings provide evidence of both single-storey and, more recently, two-storey pile-dwellings. The route from the ground floor to the living quarters and from there to the attic usually led via tree ladders – upright tree trunks with notches carved into them to serve as steps. Rung ladders were used less frequently.
