With its shaggy coat and large horns, the Bronze Age aurochs is easily recognisable as the ancestor of today’s bull. The domestic cattle, however, were far smaller than the wild animals, standing 120 centimetres at the withers, and bore a closer resemblance to today’s Scottish Highland cattle. As a source of milk and meat, and also as draught animals, they were highly valued by the community. It is probably for this reason that, towards the end of the Bronze Age, depictions of cattle appear increasingly frequently in the form of small bronze sculptures, as decorations on carts, or as components of cult objects.
