A roof covering made from reed grass from the

shores of Lake Constance lasts 10 years. The roof ridge must

also be protected with bark.

Shingles are a very durable type of roofing.

In the early days, wooden shingles

up to two metres long were used.

There are various ways to waterproof a

roof. Suitable materials include tree bark,

long grass, reeds, straw and also split

planks used as wooden shingles. Reeds

are more durable than bark if they are laid

and maintained properly. They can serve

their purpose for 20–30 years. Wooden

shingles have been used for 50 years or

more, depending on the type of wood.
