Golden hats were up to 90 centimetres tall and weigh up to 500 grams. They are made of finely embossed gold sheet. Originally, they were probably attached to an inner cap made of organic material to provide stability. Four such gold helmets have been recovered to date – in southern Germany, Switzerland and France, mostly near large hilltop settlements. All four can be attributed to the Late Bronze Age Urnfield culture. The uniform decoration of bands and rows of dots is interpreted as a calendar for determining important times of the year, such as solstices or equinoxes. The craftsmanship is extraordinary. The gold hats are associated with a sun cult. They may have served as insignia for priestesses and priests during ceremonial rites throughout the year.
