No thread without weight: the spinning whorl centred and weighted the lower end of a spindle. Set in constant rotation, it was used to spin threads from wool or flax for clothing – stretching for miles.

Spinning whorls were everyday objects. They were often worn on a belt and were individually decorated with dots, notches and lines. They are frequently found in pile-dwelling settlements, including as grave goods.
