In the advanced Bronze Age civilisations of the Mediterranean region, slavery was nothing out of the ordinary. Enslaved people were an integral part of society. North of the Alps, the meagre and, above all, unusual grave goods—which suggest the presence of outsiders—may come as a surprise. Genetic studies show, however, that women were more likely to come from distant regions than the majority of men in the village. This interpretative element aims to shatter the image of an idyllic prehistoric world and highlight that the disenfranchisement and exploitation of certain people was accepted in this region too.
