Before an animal hide can be turned into durable, supple leather, it must first be tanned using urine or a decoction of tree bark, then stretched and fulled. Only then can it be sewn into shoes, loincloths, belts, bags, quivers, leggings, jackets, weatherproof coats and caps. When cut into thin strips, leather is used to make cords, straps or ribbons.
