Walk in, flick the light switch, and you’re in full view – it wasn’t quite that simple in a pile-dwelling hut. There was no electricity yet. The interior was usually dim, as the small windows let in only a faint glow of light, even during the day. A hearth fire provided a dim glow, fuelled by pine wood shavings. These were also used to light the tallow lamps hanging from the ceiling and the candles made from rolled birch bark.
