The wicker basket was an indispensable and versatile tool in the pile-dwelling village. Animal feed, gathered herbs and mushrooms, caught fish, fresh eggs, firewood, tools, clay for the houses, pottery, fabrics, trade goods – everything was transported or stored in a wicker basket. Whether on a cart, in a dugout canoe, on the way to market or in the house, a wicker basket was always close at hand. To ensure that the raw material for it – fresh willow shoots – constantly regrows, all that is needed is regular cutting. Then fresh shoots grow on the banks every year. And nothing stands in the way of further processing into wickerwork.
