Goats and sheep transformed the Bronze Age landscape. Keeping them in herds required large areas of pasture, which in turn led to the retreat of the forests. The goats resemble wild breeds still found today. The horned Soay sheep served as models for the animal reconstructions here in the museum. Perhaps you have already noticed our small flock here in the outdoor enclosure. Soay sheep do not need to be shorn. They shed their wool regularly and it simply needs to be collected. In the Bronze Age, wool revolutionised the textile trade. Alongside plant fibres such as flax or tree bark, another raw material was now available.
