The supporting framework, floor, walls, fireplace and roof are all made of these three materials. Trees provide the raw material for the piles, pile shoes, floor coverings, wall structures, ropes and shingles. The tools \u2013 spades, hotchet handles and wedges \u2013 are also made of wood. The clay doesn&#8217;t just seal the floor. It is also used to cover the walls.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, fireplaces and ovens are made out of clay. Tree bark serves as insulation. Reed and wooden shingles form the roof. Fibers, branches and cords hold the entire structure together. A pile dwelling is completely compostable. It is conveniently located along the transportation routes and offers a unique view over the lake. The oldest finds of figurative wall paintings in Central Europe (3860 BC) come from the pile-dwelling settlements of Sipplingen and Ludwigshafen: plastic female breasts made of clay, surrounded by white dots and lines, create the image of stylized women. In between the breast pairs, there are tree-like depictions that are interpreted as trees of life or ancestral trees. The drawings are thought to be part of the internal decoration of ritual houses.
