When the herdsmen hadn\u2019t driven them into the riverside woodland or onto the harvested fields to forage, they fed on the village community\u2019s waste. Like the sheep and cattle, they were smaller than today\u2019s domestic pigs, as well as leaner and longer-legged. Compared to their wild relatives, their snouts had receded somewhat. In some settlements, however, such as Unteruhldingen and the moated castle of Buchau, there were evidently also cases of regression: due to intensive forest grazing, domestic pigs mated with wild boars, which in turn resulted in back ridges and withers heights of 85 centimetres and more.
