To complement the discovery trail with its information boards, an educational display is being created here that will showcase everyday wooden objects. Trees, shrubs, grasses, willows \u2013 the surroundings of a pile-dwelling settlement offered a wealth of natural materials that were well-suited to the production of everyday objects. But what exactly did the settlement\u2019s inhabitants of that time make of them? And how? The dugout canoe, the ever-present companion of the pile-dwelling people, was made of oak. Carts for overland travel were built from various types of wood. The same applied to the composite plough and the plough with its interchangeable parts. Both are, incidentally, also on display on the Palisade Path in the village and at the SWR House on land. Bows were made from yew wood, bowls from maple, spoons from lime wood, planks from silver fir, and winnowing baskets for separating the chaff from the wheat from beech. The handles of axes had to be particularly sturdy, which is why they were made from tough ash wood. The use of different types of wood for specific tools and objects speaks to a precise understanding of the properties of the various woods.
