Large burial mounds containing full-body interments of high-ranking individuals in wooden huts or burial chambers are among the more common finds, simply because of their size and conspicuous nature. Less easy to locate are the simple earth graves of the general population, containing isolated grave goods such as jewellery or tools. Similarly, cremation graves are sometimes richly furnished, at other times more modest. After the deceased had been cremated on the pyre, sometimes only a small urn containing a little human ash and jewellery found its way into a grave. On other occasions, the burnt remains of carts, pottery and armour, foodstuffs, horses or even imported objects from contemporary cultures beyond the Alps can also be found.
